The Home for the Elders and the Attanagalla Children’s Home was founded on 08th May 1961 in the town of Wathupitiwala in the Gampaha District, which is about 45Km from Colombo. This is another social service provided by the philanthropic family of Mrs. J.P. Obeyesekere(I) to the people of the Siyane Korale. Siyane Korale borders Kelaniya to Pasyala on one side and on the other side the Kandy Road and the Kelaniya River. It is one of the largest Korale’s in Sri Lanka.

In the early 1960’s Mrs. J.P. Obeyesekere’s son Maha Mudliyar Sir J.P. Obeyesekere(II) and her daughter Lady Hilda Pieris Obeyesekere was invited by Sir J.P. Obeyesekere’s daughter-in-law Deshamanya Mrs. Siva Obeyesekere together with Mr. Richard Manukulasuriya D.R.O. to start this project. Sir J.P. Obeyesekere volunteered to give an 8 acre land in Wathupitiwala while his sister Lady Hilda Obeyesekere Pieris offered a property 5 acre called Cadjew Wetalande in Nittambuwa. Lady Hilda’s property could not be obtained as squatters moved to occupy it, when they heard it was to be donated to a Home!

These two homes were named after Lady Hilda Obeyesekere Peiris till August 2011. It was re-named as the Sir J.P. Obeyesekere and Deshamanya Mrs. Siva Obeyesekere Home for the Elders and the Attanagalla Children’s Home, taking into account the great service provided by these two dedicated and committed people. The proposal to re name this home came from the Chief Priest of the Attanagalla Raja Maha Viharaya Ven. High Priest Pandit Dr. Pannila Ananda.

The Elders Home has 24 elderly men and 24 elderly women. They are recommended to the Home by the Department of Social Services (Western Province). The Children’s Home has 24 boys aged 6 to 16. They are recommended by the Probation & Childcare Services Department. The concept of having the elderly and young together provides a caring homely environment, which is unique.

There are 6 carers who look after the inmates. It is headed by Mr. Lakshman Jinasena Arachchi. He is like a father to the 24 children and like a loving son to the elderly. To become a father to a group of orphaned and abandoned children is a challenging task.

These Homes are run by the Siyane Korale East Social Service League. It is a registered as a social service organization No. Gam/38/84. It is an approved Charity by Gazette Notification No. 38 under section 31(7) (A) of 2000. The Chairperson is Mrs. Chantal Obeyesekere de Saram who is only the great granddaughter of Sir J.P. Obeyesekere (II). The Society is formed by dedicated and loyal volunteers from the community.

Both the Homes which are for elders and children are being maintained by the volunteers of the Siyane Korale East Social Service League. We take the honor to mention that the President of the above committee Chantal Hiranthi Obeyesekere de Saram and the Vice President Deshamanya Siva Obeyesekere take an immense effort to maintain the standards of this organization and we can witness the resulting development.
